CIRCULATION

Circulation facilitates the borrowing of LR&TS print and nonprint collections. A current St. Cloud State University ID or a Minnesota Driver's License with an LR&TS barcode is required to borrow any materials. In addition, any student or faculty with a barcoded ID from other MnSCU/PALS member institutions may borrow circulating print resources.

Students and community residents may borrow books for 4 weeks and renew books once. Graduate students automatically have a 4 week borrowing period, but may apply at the Circulation desk for an 8 week borrowing period plus one renewal. Faculty may borrow books for one academic semester and renew as necessary, up to 5 times.

Available nonprint resources include various audio/video media and equipment and are loaned for 3 days. Faculty may reserve resources and audiovisual equipment for instructional use. While most circulating equipment is geared towards faculty, students may borrow equipment for classroom or student organization presentations with an instructor's written permission, and check out audio/video media as available.

Items not returned by the due date will be fined up to $1.00 per day per item. Overdue equipment may incur larger fines. After 14 days past due, replacement cost of the item plus a processing fee will be billed. Nonpayment of fines will result in the loss of borrowing privileges or the withholding of grades, transcripts, or permission to register for classes.

RESERVES

Faculty may put course material on Reserves or Electronic Reserves at the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor of the Miller Center.

The following items may be placed on Reserves:

  • single photocopies of periodical articles and book chapters
  • individual books or non-print media from LR&TS collections
  • personal books, textbooks, manuals, periodicals

Reserve items can be located by using course title, course number, or instructor name under the "Course Reserves" library of MnPALS. Reserve items may be checked out by students at the Circulation Desk of LR&TS.

ELECTRONIC RESERVES

Electronic Reserves provides online access to course reserve materials via the web. Print items are scanned in order to be made available electronically. Audio and video resources can also be digitized and compressed, to be made available online.

The following items may be placed on Electronic Reserves:

  • print items: copies of articles, book chapters, syllabus, lecture notes that are then digitally scanned
  • files: text, image
  • clips from audio and video recordings: DVD, CD, VHS
Items on Electronic Reserve are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on or off campus. Students must use their HuskyNet account in order to access Electronic Reserves for their course.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

Through MINITEX, a cooperative regional interlibrary loan service, and OCLC, LR&TS provides access to books and journal/newspaper articles not found in LR&TS collections. Materials may be borrowed from other libraries for periods of 2 to 4 weeks and may or may not be renewable; photocopies of articles may be kept. Most items are provided free of charge to students, faculty and staff of SCSU. MnPALS supports patron initiated interlibrary loans. Items borrowed from other libraries may be picked up and returned at the Circulation Desk on the First Floor.

GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS

Government Publications collects books, pamphlets, maps, periodicals, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and other documents published by the State of Minnesota and the U.S. government. The most frequently used federal government publications contained in Learning Resources can be located through MnPALS, but many more are available.

Links to popular federal government Websites are available from the Government Publications services page. Access to federal and state CD-ROMs and DVDs are available from a designated workstation in the Reference area on 1st West. All CD-ROMs and DVDs can be checked out.

All Minnesota paper documents are located on 1st West, immediately following the Atlas shelves. Federal documents use the Superintendent of Documents classification number and paper items are shelved on 1st West (A-H) and in the basement (I-Z). Micro formats for both state and federal documents are located in the Microformat area between Periodicals and Documents on 1st West.

Questions on how to locate or use a government publication may be directed to the Reference Desk, or AskRef.

PERIODICALS

Periodicals is located in the northwest corner of the first floor of LR&TS building. This unit provides public service and access to approximately 1400 popular and scholarly publications, as well as numerous indexes and abstracts, to meet the research, curricular and recreational needs of students, faculty, staff and residents of Central Minnesota. All current print subscriptions, with details showing issues available, are listed in MNPals and the SCSU Journal Holdings list. The SCSU Journal Holdings List is a database which contains all periodical titles, both print and electronic, owned by LR&TS.

Current print journals and newspapers are kept in open stacks and are available for in-library use only. Back issues of journals and newspapers are found in either the bound volume section in the basement or in the microforms area next to Periodicals on the first floor. Bound volumes may be checked out for three days.

Print collections are supplemented by fulltext electronic access to additional titles, primarily through EBSCOHost, Project Muse , JSTOR , and Science Direct. (Deleted Academic Press IDEAL now part of Science Direct.) All are available only to SCSU students and faculty. A list of SCSU's print and electronic journals is available on the LR&TS home page under SCSU Journal Holdings.

Photocopiers are located in the basement, first and second floors. Additional photocopiers are located adjacent to the Periodical's desk. Microfiche and microfilm reader/printers are located in the microforms area. Printing from photocopiers, reader/printers, and computer workstations requires the use of a Student/Staff/Faculty ID or Community Printing Card. Community Printing Cards may be purchased in the Meeting Grounds Coffee Shop for $1.00. Additional value must then be added to the card for making copies or prints. Value can also be added to ID's in the Coffee Shop. If you need help with any photocopiers or reader/printers, please contact the Periodicals Desk.
