Emergency Evacuation Procedures

  1. Emergency Evacuation: During various emergency situations (fire, explosion, bomb threat, etc.) it may be necessary to evacuate the Miller Center. Emergency systems in place may detect an emergency and automatically announce the evacuation; other emergencies may require notification from Public Safety or official University offices.
  2. The circulation staff will be the designated coordinator for implementing emergency procedures. In absence of circulation staff, the reference librarian will act as the designated coordinator. This includes, but is not limited to, Saturday from Opening to Closing and on Sunday from Opening until the Night Supervisor reports for duty.

    Circulation Desk: 308-3083
    Reference Desk: 308-4755
  3. If the automatic announce system has not already been triggered, coordinator or designee should use the public address system to make an announcement for evacuation. All student workers should be directed to assist in the procedures.
    • System is located inside glass case behind wooden Circulation shelves.
    • Directions for using the system are posted.
    • Scripts to read for typical emergencies are in a red folder by the glass case.
  4. In case of an emergency, everyone should be instructed to leave the building through the nearest exit, and get across the street away from the building. Individuals with mobility impairments should be assisted into the nearest stairwell in the building.
    • Have them wait on the landing. [Note: Stairwells are checked by the Fire Department and are constructed to provide a higher degree of protection.]
    • Immediately notify the police or fire department if a disabled individual is waiting on a stairwell landing and provide them with the location
  5. LR&TS staff are responsible for sweeping parts of the building to be sure everyone has evacuated and moved across the street away from the building (see table). During evacuation the building is considered closed; Public Safety should be called (308-3333) when patrons refuse to leave the building.
