Tornado and/or Severe Weather Warning Procedures
Tornado and/or Severe Weather Warning: When tornado and/or severe weather sighting occurs, the National Weather Service alerts all weather stations and local authorities. If a tornado and/or severe weather is approaching, the warning will be signaled by a sounding of city emergency sirens. Public Safety will also call the Circulation Desk to alert the Miller Center . In addition, weather radios and flashlights are located in the Dean's office, Help Desk and at the Circulation, Reference and the 2 nd East Computer Lab services desks.
The circulation staff will be the designated coordinator for implementing emergency procedures. In absence of circulation staff, the reference librarian will act as the designated coordinator. This includes, but is not limited to, Saturday from Opening to Closing and on Sunday from Opening until the Night Supervisor reports for duty.
Circulation Desk: 308-3083
Reference Desk: 308-4755
Coordinator or designee should use the public address system to make announcements for tornado and/or severe weather warnings. All student workers should be directed to assist in the procedures.
- System is located inside glass case behind wooden Circulation shelves.
- Directions for using the system are posted.
- Scripts to read for typical emergencies are in a red folder by the glass case.
In case of a tornado and/or severe weather warning, patrons should be directed to designated shelter areas, which are located in the basement or interior walls of lower floors. Stay away from all windows and exterior doors. Elevators may be used, and individuals with mobility impairments should be assisted to the nearest elevator.
After patrons are directed to seek shelter in designated areas, LR&TS staff are responsible for sweeping parts of the building to be sure all patrons are in safe areas (see table). During tornado and/or severe weather warning situations, the building is considered closed and the library lobby doors will be closed. Signs will be posted indicating designated shelter areas. Public Safety should be called (308-3333) if patrons refuse to go to designated safe areas.
