Information media is a term which blends content areas of visual
literacy, communication theory, learning theory, message design/delivery,
materials management, audiovisual education, theory and practice of librarianship,
and human resources development. The Center for Information Media/Learning
Resources Services program was identified as one of the top five exemplary
learning programs for "comprehensive universities and colleges in the nation" in
a study funded and published by the Association for Educational Communications
and Technology.
The Center for Information Media has developed a Master of Science program
in educational communications, information technologies, and instructional
design/training. Each of the three graduate
tracks have been developed around the relationship between communication
and information, with students specializing in programs designed to meet their
professional needs. Encompassed within the programs are competency development
in the theory and practice of librarianship, education and information technology,
instructional systems design, and message design and delivery.
Coursework leading to public school media generalist licensure may
be completed without receiving a master's degree.
The undergraduate major is
designed to provide skills needed to prepare students for service within an
information-dependent, global society.
An undergraduate minor complements
majors in education, communication, business, history, and art.
An Instructional Technology Certificate is available for graduate and undergraduate
students. For more information, applicants should meet with a graduate adviser
in the Center for Information Media.
The Center publishes IM News, a quarterly newsletter
describing programs, courses, and projects of the center as well as providing
a means for current and former students to keep in touch.
The Center is located in the Learning
Resources Center, which also contains all library resources and services,
and InforMedia
Services. In addition to faculty offices and general classrooms, facilities
include a NASA Resource Room, a state of the art classroom and lab facilities.
The lab is open for students to develop multimedia and electronic resources
when not used for instruction.
