Resources for Distance Students
Getting Articles

For information on accessing library databases and full-text articles from off campus, see Off-Campus Access (Proxy).

Full Text Online Articles

When searching in the article databases, you may see a FindIt! link next to an article citation. FindIt! will link you directly to the online, full text article if it is available. When you find an article that you need, click on the FindIt! link and if it is available in full text, you will be sent to the appropriate database that contains that article. If the article is not available online, you can request the article through Interlibrary Loan. Please indicate that you are a distance learner in the “Notes” section of the form.

The Journal and Newspaper Titles list is searchable by journal title and will indicate if a journal is available in full text online, in what database and for what dates. If you have citation for an article you need to find but don’t where to find the article, search for the journal title to see if the issue you need is available online. If the article is not available online, you can request the article through Interlibrary Loan. Please indicate that you are a distance learner in the “Notes” section of the form.

Requesting Articles through Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

You don't have to go through a database to request articles. You can use the online Interlibrary Loan form. If SCSU does not own the journal, we will request a copy from a library that does own it and we will deliver it to you (see below).

You must use your 14-digit library barcode number and password in order to request the article. The library barcode number is located on the back of your campus ID card. Your password is your last name, unless you have changed it. If you don't know the library barcode number, consult the packet sent to you by the Center for Continuing Studies if you are enrolled through them or call the Circulation Desk at (320) 308-3083. Please ask to speak with a supervisor in order to get your barcode assigned to you. The form must be properly completed with all necessary information in order for the request to process. Please indicate that you are a distance learner in the “Notes” section of the form. SCSU students are not charged for this service.

An average of two (2) to ten (10) working days is normally required to receive a borrowed item. It may take less time, or it may take longer for a variety of reasons such as mailing the article to your home address.

If you have any questions or problems, check the Interlibrary Loan page as there may be changes occurring in the system.

Delivery of Articles

If electronic delivery is available for the article, it will be sent directly to your HuskyNet email account. If the article cannnot be delivered electronically, we will mail a photocopy of the article to your home. The library will pay for the cost of this delivery. You may keep the photocopy as it does not need to be returned to the library. Please indicate that you are a distance learner in the “Notes” section of the form.
