Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

From The African American Encyclopedia (E185 .A253 2001 Miller Center Reference Collection):
Legal holiday celebrated in most states on the third Monday of each January. President Ronald Reagan, on November 2, 1985, signed the bill creating this national holiday. Observance of it has not been universal, and many nongovernmental employers fail to recognize it. The holiday in honor of the slain civil rights leader thus remained controversial even after its creation by law.
